Sligo Grammar School has been an integral part of the Fields of Life Project in Sligo to build and support Bajja Community School, near Masaka, in Uganda. Fields of Life is a Christian organisation which supports communities in order to enable them to help themselves. To date an 8 classroom school with accommodation for teachers, toilet block, kitchens, soccer pitch and offices has been built. An interchurch team of 24, or which over half were either pupils, staff, parents, or past pupils spent 2 weeks in Bajja in July, 2007. Read our trip blog by clicking here |

The write gift

The school participated in a Fields of Life campaign to donate pencil cases containing valuable learning equipment for the children in Ugandan Schools. Each pencil case contained: A Pencil; A selection of coloured Biros; A Ruler; A pencil eraser; A pencil sharpener and other items. Classroom equipment could also be donated. The Ugandan Vice-President has kindly agreed to waiver the import tax on these pencil cases to aid their distribution to the Ugandan children.

Right you can see some of the First Form pupils who helped to collect the pencil cases - in total 153 cases were filled and over €300 collected to cover expenses! It was hard for us to accept that a pencil could be so difficult to afford in Uganda

Child Sponsorship

Many children in Uganda live in poverty and are vulnerable. Given a chance to go to school they have a hope of pulling themselves out of poverty. Child sponsorship gives a child a chance of education and helps with other basic needs. Helping a child also helps the family and the community.
Last year a first year class in the Grammar bravely took on the task of raising the 218 euro needed each year to sponsor Victo Athhienno. Victo is now 11 years old and like many Ugandan children has only one parent . many children in Uganda are either orphans or have only one parent die to Aids.
| In order to raise the sponsorship, last year, the class are organised a Sale of Work and sold hot chocolate. They raised €365! They bought 5 exotic pigs as part of the Gifts of Life scheme with the extra! |
