The 2020 Sligo Schools Rowing Competition successfully went ahead in the week before Christmas, and SGS Rowing Club had a successful outing, with several top 10 finishes. The competition took on a ‘virtual’ format this year. Secondary School students from all over the county entered the event in four categories – junior and senior boys and girls. New this year was an additional adults category for school teachers and staff. The overall format of the event was changed from a team event to an individual event to facilitate social distancing. The premise of the competition was to row as far as possible on the ergometer in a 5 minute time period. SGS Rowing Club entered 20 members in the event. In the Senior Boys event, Matthew Ryan put in a stellar effort to achieve a distance of 1358 meters. This earned him a 5th place result in an entry of 54 students. Fionn McAllister also raced in this category and achieved a respectable distance of 1260m. Meanwhile, in the Junior Girls category, first year student Ruth Beirne rowed exceptionally well to achieve a distance of 1129 meters, ranking her 8th in a field of over 90 entries. The most outstanding result was the Junior Boys category, where second year student Harry Graham completed the test with a distance of 1310 meters. This earned him second place in a field of 85 students. The category was won by Darragh Colsh of Coláiste Muire, Ballymote who scored 1344 meters. In the Adults event Rev. Patrick Bamber excelled with his performance of 1414 meters, placing him third – his days of training with the Oxford squad certainly standing to him!
