After a long hard season of rugby, Sligo Grammar School Senior Cup Team brought home the silverware on Tuesday 15th March. In a cold and wet Galway the SGS team met Coláiste Iognáid (Jes) Galway to battle it out in the Final of the Connacht Schools Senior Rugby Cup. The Jes got off to a strong start with a converted try bringing the score to 7–0. A penalty followed which left the Grammar behind at 10–0. Then an unconverted try from Jonjo Devine brought the score to 10–5 and this was soon followed by a penalty kick from Earl Norris, leaving the half-time score at 10–8 to the Jes. Sligo Grammar came back with a vengeance after the break , playing a strong defensive game and denying Jes any opportunity to score. The Grammar had to work hard until the 67th minute of the game when Matthew Ryan scored a much-needed try which was converted by Earl Norris. The Jes worked fiercely to get to the try line but Sligo Grammar’s strong defensive play denied them the opportunity. The final score was 15-10 to Sligo Grammar School. A fantastic year’s work from the dedicated SGS Team and their coaches, James Gavin, Seán Taylor, and Gavin Foley assisted by Jimmy Staunton. Thanks, too, to the fantastic support from the 200+ SGS students who travelled by bus to support the team and to the teachers who accompanied them on the journey. It was great to see so many past pupils in the crowd, coming to cheer the boys on.
