Remembrance Service 2020

Posted on : November 21, 2020

On Friday 20th Nov. 2020 Sligo Grammar School held its Annual Remembrance Service. This year it was a pre-recorded Virtual Remembrance Service and reflected on the way our world has been turned upside-down by Covid19. Our headmaster thanked the students and whole school community for their great efforts in complying with all the guidelines set down by the HSE for the protection of the country. The guest speaker, historian Simone Hickey, spoke to us about the sacrifices of the soldiers of World War I, including past pupils of Sligo Grammar School, and drew comparisons with the word we find ourselves in today. She spoke about our duty to keep one another safe and about those on the front line, both in the past and in 2020.  As well as wreaths being laid in memory of the past pupils who died in both world wars, wreaths were also laid by Nurse Lorraine Craig who represented the Frontline workers during the present epidemic, Chief Superintendent Aidan Glackin, representing members of An Garda Siochána who died in the line of duty, and Capt. Myles Gallagher, remembering fallen members of the Defence Forces, Ireland. Music was provided by students Johannes Kavanagh, Alastair Hill , Kate Gavin and Eilís Needham with help from some of their teachers and Mr Michael Casey. The Head Girl, Genevieve Cox, Deputy Head Girl, Emma Gallagher, Deputy Head Boy, Matthew O’Hara  and Isaac Ellison provided the readings, along with Headmaster Mr Michael Hall and DP Mr Jimmy Staunton.   The video can be viewed on our Home Page and in Gallery 2020-2021.
