On Thursday 17th November Sligo Grammar School held its annual Service of Remembrance and Reconciliation. The whole school turned out to remember those who died in both World Wars. Also remembered were members of An Garda Síochána and the Irish Defence Forces who died in the line of duty and Irish soldiers who died while on service with the United Nations. Representatives of the various Churches in Sligo led the prayers, including Rev. Canon Patrick Bamber, Dean Arfon Williams, Rev. Canon Noel Regan, Fr. John Carroll and Rev. David Clarke. Special guests were the Most Reverend Kevin Doran, Bishop of Elphin and the Most Reverend John McDowell, Archbishop of Armagh, who addressed the congregation. The Chairperson of the SGS Board of Directors, Ms Fania Ellison, and Most Rev. John McDowell, Archbishop of Armagh laid wreaths in memory of the SGS Past Pupils who fell in both World Wars while Most Rev. Kevin Doran, Bishop of Elphin, laid one in memory of the Irish soldiers who fell in both Wars. Representatives from an Garda Síochána, the Irish Defence Forces and the Irish United Nations laid wreaths to remember their fallen.  Additional wreaths were laid on behalf of the Connacht Rangers and the Kildare and Midland Branch of the British Legion, Republic of Ireland. The School Choir under the baton of Jonathan Carter and music students, directed by Keith O’Donnell, added greatly to the occasion.
