On Thursday 14th May the Leaving Cert students of Sligo Grammar School marked the end of formal class with a day of celebration and fun. Following a special breakfast in the dining hall the sixth years spent the first part of the morning rehearsing for the evening ceremony. Then they got togged out for the traditional soccer match and game of rounders against the staff. The whole school turned out to watch the competition, and, although the weather was a bit inclement, they enjoyed the “Staff vs Sixth Years” clashes. The soccer match ended in a draw while the rounders was won by the Staff team. In the meantime an ice-cream van was on site to provide ice-cream treats for the sixth years, while the rest of the school had an opportunity to buy themselves an ice cream! The day was a lot of fun for the sixth years who left school after lunch to get ready for the main event, the Valedictory Service in Calry Church, later that evening. The service was conducted by School Chaplain, Rev. Canon Patrick Bamber. The Head Girl and Head Boy along with some of their peers addressed their classmates and families, reminiscing about their six years in SGS. There was also some music provided by class members. Afterwards the students, their families, friends and teachers gathered in the dining hall for supper. See some photos from the day HERE. Although formal classes are over, the students will be attending Study hall for the next two weeks with their teachers on hand to help and advise them. We wish all the sixth year students all the best as they prepare for their exams.
