Since the foundation of the school rugby has been the main sport for boys. There are several teams in the school ranging from first to sixth year. Sligo Grammar School are renowned in Connacht as a strong team historically and this has continued in recent seasons with the school enjoying great success.

Junior Cup Team - 2008 cONNACHT CUP WINNERS!

This year's Junior Cup team produced an amazing season in which they completed the double in winning both the Connacht League and Cup competitions. The Cup final was played in the Sportsgrounds against Marist College in windy conditions. The Grammar started by playing into the wind and were unfortunate to go behind after only 3 to a well constructed try.

The Grammar struck back before the break having been camped on the opposition's line for several minutes. Soon after halftime the Grammar outhalf dropped a stunning dropgoal which proved to be the vital score.  The team did well to hold out the Marist attackers and showed their determination in defence.  

Well done to the JCT team - you did us proud!  A fantastic result.

 

Senior Cup Team

This year's very young Senior Cup team were drawn away in a local derby against Summerhill for the quarter-final . They entered the game as underdogs and put in an fabulous display to emerge as victors.

They bowed out of the Connacht Senior Cup competition at the semi-final stage after an enthralling tie against Galway's Colaiste Iognaid which ended 27-6. A determined Grammar side were better then the score line would suggest and the players put in a huge performance. The match was played in the Grammar and an encouraging crowd cheered on the team right to the end.

Tag rugby

Not to be outdone by the boys the girls have taken up tag rugby and the 1st years have already been picking up medals!  Well done girls!

 

Rugby Tour of South Africa Summer 2008         

We are really looking forward to the planned Rugby Tour of South Africa Summer 2008.   This will be a three week tour and we  are doing this in preparation for the Senior Cup.

Any sponsorship would be warmly welcomed , needless to say - just contact the school.   Team members are busy washing cars, organising raffles and quizzes.

The Rugby Race Night, on 8th of February in the Glasshouse Hotel proved to be a great success. We would once again like to thank all our sponsers and those who attended. A great evening was had by all.
