Rugby

Since the foundation of the school rugby has been the main sport for boys. There are several teams in the school ranging from first to sixth year. Sligo Grammar School are renowned in Connacht as a strong team historically and this has continued in recent seasons with the school enjoying great success.

This year our Senior rugby team won their Connaught final against "The Jes" on Wednesday 10th March . The Grammar played brilliantly, showing great skills and talent. Many supporters turned up covered from head to toe in the Grammar colours – navy and white.

 

 

 

The Grammar were 11-8 down at half-time but didn't give up there, securing 18 points, including a lovely drop-goal and a wonderful try which got converted minutes from the end. This brought the score to 26-11 which was the end score. "The Jes" put up a good fight but the best team won in the end!! The cup was presented to the schoolon Friday morning in assembly.

This year already we had the pleasure of rugby players making the Connacht trials and from that making the All-Ireland. Left, three of our senior rugby players showing their determination for the sport that this school is famous for. - one of them made the Irish Rugby Squad and the other the Irish Youth Squad Panel.

 

 

 

 

JCT Cup campaign 2009 -2010

The junior team went well until the semi finals of the junior Connaught Cup.  They were unlucky to be beaten by Summerhill. 

Well played to both teams - even though you didn't get the silverware you did us proud.

In December 2009, the JCT team beat the JES in Galway to win the Connacht league. They had a very respectable 22-0 win.

The Senior team recently had an extremely comprehensive win in the Quarter final of the Cup, against the Marist college.  Our competitive spirit is sharp for the semi-final in March!

Tag rugby

Not to be outdone by the boys the girls have taken up tag rugby and the 1st years have already been picking up medals!  Well done girls!
