In a cold and wet Galway the SGS team met Coláiste Iognáid (Jes) Galway to battle it out in the Final of the Connacht Schools Senior Rugby Cup. This term our 5th year art students got the chance to work with practicing artist Kiera O’Toole as part of the BLAST Artist in Residence programme. During January Kiera visited the school to discuss and plan the project with the students. She showed the students her own work and the 5th years were particularly taken with site-specific work – that is art work that was done at chosen sites, and using the environment as a canvas. This is funded by money that was made from the clothes recycling drive they held earlier in the year. This year the TYs got away on their Ski Trip and spent a fantastic week in Italy. The destination was Santa Caterina Valfurva in the North of the country, and the TYs enjoyed some great snow for the trip. Each day saw an early start on the slopes with a busy day of ski instruction and practice. The evenings saw activities including the ever-popular sledding. Again this year Sligo Grammar School TY students have entered the Irish Angus Beef Schools Competition. There are three stages to complete before the final competitors are selected. In stage one the students submitted videos presenting their project ideas, and following this, two SGS groups have progressed to the second stage of the competition. On Monday 17th January the SGS U16 Hockey Team finished a fantastic campaign by winning the U16 Connacht Schools Cup Final, having gone unbeaten all season. They met Salerno Secondary School, Galway in the final which was played in SGS. The Sligo team twice came back from behind, at 1 – 0 down and 2-1 down to win 3-2 in the end. Hi folks, Its back…Monday 10th January sees the return of the Sligo Grammar School Strava Challenge, encouraging our school community to get active for the next 10 weeks. Staff and Students are invited to take on the challenge to get outside and get active by walking, running or cycling a few times a week. The school will be handing out weekly spot prizes for those who take part. Details on how to join can be found in YouTube link below.
The 2021 Sligo Schools Indoor Rowing Competition took place last week in a ‘virtual’ format with several secondary schools taking part. Sligo Grammar School had 50 students entered. The race took place in the school gym hall with groups of 8 students using the rowing machines at a time. The race was a 5 minute time trial with the objective to row as far as possible in that time.
