Connacht Schools Rugby Champions

On Wednesday 22nd March the Sligo Grammar School Senior Rugby Team did the school proud as they became Connacht Schools Senior Rugby Cup Champions for the second year in a row. They beat Marist College, Athlone at the Sportsground in Galway with a final score of 28 – 7. Sligo Indoor Rowing Success

Sligo Grammar School hosted the Sligo Schools Indoor Rowing Competition this year, the first ‘in person’ competition since Covid. Ten secondary schools from around county Sligo attended, making it a huge event, with 180 students taking part, split evenly between girls and boys. SGS Rowing Club submitted their largest entry ever, with 30 students entered in the individual races plus seven crews for the team events. The individual event consisted of each rower racing for 5 minutes on the rowing

Junior Cycle Award Winner

Congratulations to TY student, Diarmaid O’Connell who received an award in recognition of his excellent result in the 2022 Junior Cycle Irish exam. The Special Irish Recognition Award was presented by University of Galway to students across Connacht who achieved over 90% in their Junior Cycle Irish exam. Past-pupil Martin Gordon visited the school on Wednesday 16th March to present his Paralympic jersey to the school. Martin represented Ireland in paracycling in Tokyo in 2021 and has competed in the Paracycling World Championships in the past. This year he will represent his country again in the World Championships in Glasgow. He is presently in training in Abbotstown at the high performance unit and has just returned from a training camp in Glasgow. He will shortly travel to Portugal

Debating Success

It’s been a successful term for SGS Debaters. On Saturday 4th March, members of the Sligo Grammar School Debate Club competed in the Connacht Schools Mace Debating Final at Galway University. The day was very successful for Ellen O’Hara and Daití Meehan who came second in the Junior Grand Final. In the Senior Grand Final Alfie Barron and Siofra McElduff were also awarded second place. The Irish Indoor Rowing Championships took place on Saturday 4th February at UL. Sligo Grammar School had a total of nine students from the rowing club entered in individual events and two team events. On Sunday 5th February eight Sligo Grammar School students travelled to Longford for the Connacht Schools Swim Gala. All the SGS students turned in great performances in the Individual and Relay events. A special mention goes to Matthew O’Grady who won a Bronze medal in the 100m Breaststroke, and Gold in the 100m Backstroke. Matthew now qualifies to represent Connacht in the upcoming Nationals. On Monday 16th January, TY students Ellen Hunter, Lara Clinch, Louise Robertson and Sophie Swann attended the Irish Angus Beef Schools Competition interviews in TUS Midlands Campus in Athlone. The competition asks students to present projects promoting Irish Angus beef.  There are three stages in the initial round of the competition from which five groups will be chosen.
