Our TY Green Schools Committee have had a very productive year and the whole group should be very proud of their many achievements. Litter and Waste was the first theme they chose to deal with, and they tried to find ways of eliminating litter and reduce waste output in the school. On Thursday 19th May the class of 2022 celebrated their last day of class.  In the morning the sixth years were treated to breakfast in the dining hall followed by the now traditional Students/Staff soccer match. This year victory went to the Staff! A game of rounders  was also played and, again, the Staff team came out on top. This year SGs has been very active in bringing issues around Climate change to the forefront of our minds. The Green Schools and Sustainable Living groups in TY have been doing sterling work in this area but so also have the junior years. On April 1st Sligo Grammar School held a special day-long event to celebrate the wonderful diversity within our school. The day saw activities and events designed to highlight and enjoy the diverse cultures within SGS. Last week, on Friday 11th March, Sligo Grammar School 2nd Yr Basketball Team won the north West League Semi-Final, beating St Gerald’s  College, Castlebar. Sligo Grammar started off with an 8-0 lead in the first 3 mins with Jasper Gimena leading the way and Ben O’Connor chipping 5 points off fast break runs. After a long hard season of rugby, Sligo Grammar School Senior Cup Team brought home the silverware on Tuesday 15th March. In a cold and wet Galway the SGS team met Coláiste Iognáid (Jes) Galway to battle it out in the Final of the Connacht Schools Senior Rugby Cup.  The Jes got off to a strong start with a converted try bringing the score to 7–0. International Women’s Day did not go unmarked in Sligo Grammar School this year! Throughout the day activities, displays and celebrations were held to mark the contribution of women to the life of the school – and the country. The Girls Basketball team joined other girls teams from around the region for an International Women’s Day Basketball Blitz in the Mercy College, Sligo. This year the TYs got away on their Ski Trip and spent a fantastic week in Italy. The destination was Santa Caterina Valfurva in the North of the country, and the TYs enjoyed some great snow for the trip. Each day saw an early start on the slopes with a busy day of ski instruction and practice. The evenings saw activities including the ever-popular sledding. Again this year Sligo Grammar School TY students have entered the Irish Angus Beef Schools Competition. There are three stages to complete before the final competitors are selected. In stage one the students submitted videos presenting their project ideas, and following this, two SGS groups have progressed to the second stage of the competition.
