SGS Soccer Club

The SGS Soccer Club got up and running again this year. Mr. Mooney trains both girls and boys, and matches have already begun. The U17 Boys played a Friendly V Lough Allen College Drumkeerin last week in Dromahair, and won 8 – 2.  The boys, who were captained by Ashraf Tumuheirwe, attacked from the beginning to end of the game and were good value for their win. Conor Creaven netted a hattrick and Dylan McCloat, Earl Norris and Oisin Hennessey also scored. Gareth McGinty netted the goal of the match with a tremendous curling shot from the left wing. The boys will play Gortnor Abbey (Crossmolina) in a preliminary round of the Connacht Cup on Tuesday 23rd Nov. Hopefully, they will have their shooting boots on that day. On Friday 17th the U17 Girls team went straight into a Connacht Cup game and produced a fine performance against Grange Vocational School. For several members of the team this was their first competitive game for the school, and they all acquitted themselves well. Saoirse O’Donovan captained the side and deserves great credit for sorting out a squad to play. The Grammar took the lead through a Sara Al Mawaly shot that took a wicked deflection. The score was 1-0 at half-time. In the second half Lara Swann scored an incredible goal. The Sligo Rovers player waltzed past at least 5 Grange players and planted a great shot in the corner of the goals. Lara’s run began deep in her own half and was worth the entrance fee alone! Further goals were added by Luisa Schierenberg and Saoirse O’Donovan. The whole team played really well and are looking forward to their final group game against St. Clare’s Manorhamilton in early December.

Well done to all and good luck in the coming matches.
