The students train indoors on rowing machines every Friday after school. The focus is on developing good technique on the ergometer so that this can transition to the boat. Finally, this October, the finished “Mask On/Mask Off” whole-school art/photography project was installed on the main stairwell of the school. The ten 4ft x 4ft panels display photos of virtually all the school population taken in May 2021 during Creative Schools Week. The photos give us a snapshot of the impact of mask-wearing in school in 2020 and 2021. Right now they are busy preparing colourful planters to be placed at the front entrance to the school. Others are getting stuck into digging out the soil in the raised beds of the school community garden to plant food crops for next year. Finally the school is delighted to get involved
Art students from Sligo Grammar School last year embarked on a project inspired by St Paul’s Church, Collooney, which is finally celebrating its 300th anniversary this year. The celebrations were delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but now are going ahead on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 September. Well done to TY student Killian Langton who won the County Sligo Swimming Club 3K swim race on Glencar Lake just before returning to school. Killian has represented SGS in swimming in the past and is a dedicated member of Sligo Swim Club. He trains 5 days a week and has been a consistent competitor in races around the country. On Monday 13th September former Ireland Rugby Captain, Rory Best, reached Sligo on the sixth day of his 180 mile walk from Newcastle, Co. Down to Cong, Co. Mayo. The walk is in aid of Cancer Fund for Children, and funds raised will go towards building a Short Break Centre for children with cancer.
