Brothers Adam & Ben Foley have been competing on the regatta scene over the last two weekends. The National Schools Regatta took place in Limerick at the end of April and showcased a total of 77 schools from all across the island of Ireland. The Sligo Grammar boys raced together in the U23 double scull category and also raced in their respective singles category. The rowers competed in a 1500 meter time trial with the top 4 going through to the regatta final. Ben was sculling in the J16 event and with a large entry of 35 students he put in a credible result, finishing 25th. Meanwhile Adam was also part of a large field in the U23 singles with 29 students entered. It was heart break for Adam when the times came through and he found he was placed 6th on the table, just outside the top four by 0.8 of a second! While it was disappointing not to go through to the final Adam can take solace knowing he is up there with the best of Irish schools’ talent.
On to last weekend and the Grammar boys travelled south to compete in Bantry Regatta. It was another weekend of high-octane racing with a large entry and 7 lanes covering the 500m course. The long drive to west Cork proved fruitful as Adam picked up a win in the J18 single scull.
The school would like to thank Ken and Linda Foley for their help with logistics and to Sligo Rowing Club for facilitating the Grammar students with coaching and equipment.
