Debating Success

No sooner has the school year started than the SGS Debating Society – SGS DebSoc – is flying high! On Saturday 17th September three of our debaters took part in the Connacht/Munster Regional Trials for the Irish Schools Debating Team which will represent Ireland in Vietnam in July. Anushka Pathak (6th year), Alfie Barron (5th year)  and Dáithí Meehan (3rd year) competed in the trials via Zoom. Alfie and Dáithí made it through to the play-offs and were the only students from Connacht to be chosen to go through to the National Finals which will take place in Dublin on the 1st and 2nd of October.

Although Anushka did not make it through to the finals this time, she had her own debating success earlier in the year. She was selected for the National European Youth Parliament (EYP) in April and, on the strength of her participation and debating skills, was then selected for the International European Youth Parliament which took place in Finland in August. Out of 400 applications, only 40 were selected to go forward – one of whom was Anushka. She is now a member of the organisation and will be on the Organising Committee for the Connacht/Ulster 2022/23 Regional Session. Well done to all three students, and a special thank you goes to Ms Hall who runs the Debating Society. There are over 20 students involved this year meeting every Wednesday after school, and everyone is welcome to come along!
