Diversity Day 2023

On Friday 24th March Sligo Grammar School held a Diversity Day. This special event was organised by Ms McGuinness and a committee of students from across the school. The aim of the Day was to celebrate the great diversity we have in our school. We are lucky to have students from all across the globe in SGS and on Friday they had the opportunity to teach their peers something about their countries and culture. The day began with a whole-school assembly in Calry Church where the students and staff were addressed by two asylum seekers from Globe House, Sligo. They described their own circumstances to the students and explained the challenges associated with seeking asylum in Ireland. Following the assembly the first years got involved in a “Diversity Quiz”, hosted by Mr. Tiarney, while the students involved in the main event – the Cultural Expo – prepared their stalls. The whole school got the opportunity to go down to the gym and explore the many nationalities and cultures we have in the school. The biggest draw was the array of food on offer, all prepared by the students and their parents. The afternoon saw a Talent Show in the foyer where the contestants gave us a flavour of many musical styles from trad to jazz to pop! All students contributed €2 to a fundraiser for Diversity Sligo a local group which helps refugees and asylum seekers find their feet in Sligo. The day was a real “feel-good” event and huge thanks go to the organising committee and Ms McGuinness for all the hard work. See some photos HERE.
