Last weekend a group of 18 T.Y. students travelled to Dublin to take part in Mock Trials that take place every year. This year they were held in the new Criminal Court of Justice. Each school had three trials to prepare for and the Grammar did very well by winning one of their cases. Congratulations to all who took part in it.
Archaeology Trip

On the 11th,12th,13th and 14th of May the Transition Year students went on an Archaeology/Blacksmith trip! The four classes went over the course of the week We went to a forge. When we arrived we were split into 2 groups and one went to the forge first while the other went on a walk to the ring fort!

While we were in the forge our teacher showed us how to make objects out of iron! He did an example by making us a leaf!! The iron had to be red hot and we had to wear protective shoes so the sparks wouldn't burn us! Then we got the chance to test our skills when we started to make a crown!! After lunch we swapped and went on a walk by Slish Wood!
St vincent de paul

On the 12th of May, a group of 6 girls in T.Y went down to the Sligo Park Hotel at nine in the morning and they set up a stand. They had two large sheets covered in photos of the bag packing they did on the 7th of May in Dunnes Stores in aid of S.V.P. There were some boys from Summerhill also bag packing. The girls enjoyed a lovely day beginning with speeches, lunch in the afternoon and presentations of projects and Certificates in the evening..
Driving course
Many TY students took this great oppurtunity offered by Sligo Grammar School to do a driving course in Gills. The students were taught about theory and practical driving, which will set them up for the driving test later on.

Last Saturday a group of 16 T.Y. students went to the Criminal Court of Justice, Dublin for mock trials. 28 schools from around the country all travelled to Dublin for this competition. Each school had to participate in three cases. The Grammar went up against 3 very good schools and we won one of our cases. Congratulations to the team!

eagles flying
On Monday the 26th of April the T.Y. year went to Ballymote to a
birds of prey sanctuary called Eagles Flying. Under Mr. Moore's
supervision we watched as birds from sparrow hawks to a bald
headed vulture! We were able to walk around freely for a while, watching the birds, peacocks, eagle owls and vultures,
petting a ferret named Bob, and ogling at giant birds.
After the flying demonstration, we were brought to the
petting facility where we saw all animals from baby guinea pigs,
rabbits and goats, to donkeys, a pot belly pig and a giant black
and pink pig called Bertie! We arrived back at school completely
exhausted at four o clock.
It was an amazing trip!
Careers Week -Trip to NUIG
As part of a week focusing on "The World of Work" many TY Students visited NUI Galway to see what is done in this University. Students took us around in two groups - it was great to see the University in action including all the facilities for sport as well as lecture halls and laboratories.
We had an hour free in Galway and then headed to the rugby cup final at the Showgrounds.
Later in the week a group went to the Dublin Universities
Car Safety Workshop
All TY students did a Car Safety workshop, which outlined all of the main things people need to know about safety
ARMED EYE VIDEO PRODUCTION

Recently The Armed Eye Video Production workshop took place. Thirty student took part and all thoroughly enjoyed it. By the end of the day the students had produced a DVD! It was even quite good!!
Ty retreat day

On Tuesday 26th January a retreat day was scheduled for all of the TY students. A group called 3Rock Youth and a C.I.Y.D.youth officer came to the school. They are based in Dublin and lead exciting retreats for young people in secondary school. They use games, personal stories, discussion groups and interactive exercises to explore the deeper themes of personal faith, a relationship with God and life skills. It invoked a lot of thought and was a spiritual day for everyone involved.
Film study workshop

On Monday 25th there was a film studies workshop open to any TY students who wanted to go. It was a very productive day and they learnt how films were made and developed, how sound and colour are later inserted into films and how how to splice movies. All who attended really enjoyed the day and who know we might have some budding new movie makers!!!
Trip to Dublin

All TY students went on a trip to Dublin. The trip was divided into multiple sections. The dance class went to a dance workshop in the dance workshop on Foley Street. The HE class did a Dress and Style workshop on Pearse Street. And all other students went on a tour of Croke Park.
Afterwards, every single TY student went Ice-skating in Liffey Valley shopping centre Dublin (pictured). All students really enjoyed this trip to Dublin!!
TY annual sponsored swim
Transition Year students took to the water in Rosses Point for the Annual Sponsored Swim. All of the proceeds went to charity as usual. We collected €920 in total. Well done to all involved!!
Visit to Boda Borg

All Transition Year students visited the Boda Borg Adventure Centre in Lough Key Forest Park. Here we did different puzzles and activities to unlock the various levels. It was thouroughly enjoyed by all involved.
creative writing workshop

All TY students did a Creative Writing workshop, in which we wrote creative pieces on different topics. We were given various headings and wrote on them. We created some great pieces!
killary adventure centre
All TY students visited Killary
Adventure Centre. In Killary we all did a canoe race. We also
jumped into the water from a high distance, went gorge-walking
(walking up a stream) and the Killary challenge. The Killary
challenge
consisted of many things such as fitting through ropes, moving
on planks of wood, and finally, jumping into the bog. You can
see what a mucky experience it was!
Visiting concert

A band called 'The Odd Couple' came to visit our school on the 12th October 2009. The band included Kieran Quinn, Eddie Lee and Sinéad Conway who is a past pupil in Sligo Grammar School.
surfing module
This year every Transition Year student did a four week surfing module with the Strandhill surf school. We have some great surfers here in Sligo Grammar School!
Poetry workshop
The Transition Year students all did a poetry workshop earlier on this year. We all produced some great poems, which really impressed our English teachers! Some of the poems have been kept safe on the school computers and might be published into the school magazine later on in the year.

All of transition year recently took part in a PAL workshop. This workshop meant that students got to take part in a court case against each other. students enjoyed the event as it gave them an insight into what a court case is really like. After the workshop a team was chosen to represent the school at the Mock Trials in the Four Courts in Dublin on the 25th of April. the team consisted of 2 barristers, a solicitor, a registrar, 4 witnesses, 2 reporters, an artist and a photographer. Also 6 jurors. They performed really well and won two out of three cases. The photographer came in second position in the photography competition.
Bridge Competition
Some TY classes recently took part in a bridge competition against the Mercy College Sligo and of course all the students preformed to the best of their ability. Everyone enjoyed the event.
sim-2-learn

Some members of TY recently took part in a Sim-2-Learn driving course which seen them learning the basics of how to drive before taking to the high roads. Sim-2-Learn is a great opportunity for all people leaning to drive and all the students thoroughly enjoyed the event.
try-a-dive

RRecently as part of a busy year twelve intrepid TY pupils headed to the local pool and enjoyed an evening "trying-a-dive. Learning first how to snorkle they were later kitting up with the full equipment and completed a dive within the pool. Each got a certificate to prove their bravery!!!
