Pupil wins Tyrone/Tipperary Crystal Design Competition!!!

A group of students designed a range of contemporary crystal which was entered into the Tyrone/Tipperary Crystal Design Competition.  From this group the winner of the national prize is a present 6th year pupil.   He designed the crystal in a strong, masculine, architectural way so that it would appeal to the male buyer as well as female. He competed in the 2nd level schools section and was overall winner of this prestigious award. He won €700 worth of free flights with RyanAir, his design will be produced and sold by Tipperary Crystal and he will receive income from it during it’s first year on the market. Included in the prize was €400 towards the Art department within the school.

European Schoolnet eLearning Award Win!!!

European Schoolnet's eLearning Awards were presented at a prize ceremony during the EMINENT 111 conference in Stockholm on 21st November.  Nineteen projects were selected out of over 700 projects and the Grammar's project with St. Mary's, Dundalk won a joint 4th place!  We presented our winning haloproject to experts and finalists from 20 jurisdictions. There were 2 other Irish project finalists at  the conference.  Full details from www.eun.org

Inter Provincials

Four students from our school recently competed in the rugby schools inter-provincials. They played on the Connacht team. They played four matches in total, three of which they were victorious. The first match they played was against The Leinster A team. They then went on to play against the Munster A side and the Ulster South Country team. All of which they were victorious. They were later defeated by the Leinster Reserves. The game against the Ulster South Country team was held at the Sligo Grammar School and attracted a very large crowd. The team has now been crowned the champions of the Inter-Provincials series and the four students are looking forward to any future matches.

Esat BT Young Scientists and Technology Exhibition 2003

This year our school has entered three projects into the exhibition. The three groups were successful in the first stage of the competition and will be attending the finals in the R.D.S. in January 2003 which will consist of 480 projects. The three groups which were selected from a total of 910 projects nationwide have done a large amount of research for their projects and are looking forward to the finals.

The first group has selected "The Effect of Caffeine on People" as the topic for their project. The second group has chosen "Different Kinds of Water Affect How Paint Fades" and the third group has chosen "The Strength and Durability of Concrete" as their projects.                           

Essay Winner

One of our Transition Year students wrote an essay on the topic of “How Ireland has contributed to the European Union", and also on how he thinks it will carry on contributing in an enlarged Union of 25 member states in the future”. He won the Sligo entry, and on December 8th he leaves for Strasbourg with 25 other county winners to participate in the four- day Euroscola debate. We hope he enjoys the trip as it was well deserved

CoastWatch

Last week the 5th year Geography class went on a coastwatch trip to Strandhill and the Sligo Dock area. The trip was part of a study they have undertaken to monitor the effects of coastal erosion and water pollution within a given area.

Prize Day

Our school had our annual Prize Day celebrations for the school year of 2001/2002 on 25th October. This began with a service of Praise & Thanksgiving in Calry church aided by the school choir, which was performed well. The prize giving service was lucky to include a guest speaker; Professor Spearman, from The Incorporated Society. A report on the past year was given by our Headmaster, afterwards the prizes were handed out to the receiving students, both present and past.

Refurbished Computer Room

There has been a very major refurbishment of the computer room in the last 12 months.  The suite now comprises of 24 pcs which are networked and all running Office XP.  The room now has ISDN Internet access. 

New Students

We welcome our new group of First Years who are pictured above.  We hope they will enjoy their time with us.  They certainly have begun their time in Sligo Grammar School with enthusiasm and energy!

We also welcome the students who have joined us from as far a field as Mexico, Siberia, South Africa and Spain

Surfing

Last Month three students competed in the European Surfing Championships in Mimizan, France representing Ireland. Due to lack of swell half the competition was cancelled meaning the two body boarders did not get to finish their Events. However congratulations to one of the students who finished  his event and is now ranked 4th in Europe in the U-14 Free style surfing category.
