News for the Academic Year 2009-2010

The Cabin

The Cabin is now fully complete and is currently open to all students at lunchtime from 1:30 to 1:50 on a Tuesday, and on Wednesdays from 1:05 -1.50 for "Cabin Fever"!

The Cabin provides a space where students can come to sit or think etc.... There are lots of interactive objects! For example we have a shredding machine if a person feels the need to write a problem down and say sorry to God and this way it can symbolise being forgiven and getting rid of it! Also, there is a notice board where people can pin up prayers.

Inside the cabin it has a homely feel! There are books, paper, a DVD player and lots more. Left - two students  escaping from their hectic lives!

snow!!!

After the Christmas holidays the school was due to open again on Thursday 7th January. But due to the cold snap not many people turned up. The school then decided not to open on Friday as it would  have been too dangerous for the pupils to come in. Over the weekend the Minister for Education announced that all schools will stay shut until Thursday 14th, much to the delight of the students!!! But he then retracted this statement on Monday, and the school opened its doors again on Wednesday 13th.

Carol Service

The annual Carol Service was held again this year in Calry Church. It was the traditional '9 Lessons and 9 Carols' and as always the choir gave a stunning performance.

"The Cabin" - Our New Sacred Space

Right you can see Harry building on our new Sacred Space -"The Cabin" which is situated to the right of the school building entrance.

The purpose of this new cabin is to provide an area within the school to support Christian Spiritual growth and exploration  in an innovative and fresh way.  it is be non-denominational and has different areas within it.

Recently it was used to enable pupils to respond to the Haiti crisis.

The interior is still being developed - we would welcome help form anyone.

We appreciate the significant financial help that the Church of Ireland Priorities Fund gave us.

The annual school prize day was held in Calry Church.  It started with an short Service of Worship and was followed by the head boy and head girl (left) delivering the Annual School Report.  The guest speaker was Dr. Wendy Marsden from the University of Edinburgh.

Revd. Noel Regan spoke on behalf of the Board of Directors and the headmaster also addressed the gathering.

Farewell to MR. Costello

We say a fond farewell to Mr. Costello after years of service to the school. He will be missed by all especially his students, who'll miss his amiable character and his good sense of humour. We wish him good luck in his retirement.

Congratulations to Mr. Griffin, our new vice principle

Following the retirement of Mr. Morris at the start of this year Mr. Griffin took over his position as the new vice principle of our school. He is keeping a tight reign on the uniforms and also doing many other things behind the scenes. But he is enjoying his new role and hopes to make many more improvements to the school.

Morris' farewell party

Oliver Morris' many achievements and contributions to the life of Sligo Grammar School were celebrated at a gathering in the Clarion Hotel. Presentations were made by the Staff, the Board of Directors, the Parents Association and the Past Pupils.  The evening was rich in memories, laughter and emotion.  We may have lost Mr. Morris as a deeply committed colleague but know he will always remain as a friend.
