Athletics

Athletics has gone from strength to strength in the last couple of years.  All are encouraged to get involved.  The intention is to develop the sport for recreation as well as competition.  Training has gone really well this season with huge numbers turning up twice a week.

The highlight of the first term was the "Grammar Mile" where 72 students completed the challenge at the Sligo IT athletics track.  The Champions are pictured right!

In the Easter Term the focus is on the cross country teams.  Thirty-eight students travelled to Galway for the Connacht Finals and had a hugely successful day returning with 17 athletes qualifying for the All Irelands in Jordanstown in Belfast;  2 individual Connacht titles; 2 team Connacht titles; silver individual and silver team!!  Well done all!l

There was no Regional Cross-Country competition this year due to cut-backs but we did go to the Connacht final in Galway.  The school was represented in ALL the girls' divisions and all minor and inter-boys divisions.  A terrific set of results were won - with 17 of our athletes qualifying for All-Irelands.  We also became Inter boys and girls Connacht Team Champions; won the Interp-boy and Inter-girld Individual Championship

Finally in Track and Field we had 87 compete in the Regional event and 57 in the Connacht Finals.  We had 5 individual champions and the Inter-boys were Connacht Champios.  16 of our Athletes went to the All-Irelands in Tullamore and returned with a Bronze Medal for 3000m and a 4th placing.  One of the boys has been selected for the Irish Schools Track and Field Team

Not a bad year - What do you think?!!!!  Well done all!
